How to paint your memories!

When I was in Rome last October (2010), the scenes in front of me were just too much for me to capture in a complete sketch, a finished watercolor or any other media for that matter. But, a few minutes sitting in the middle of a piazza, sitting on my suitcase, revealed to me the reality of the situation. Taking pictures was not enough for me. I had to seize the local color, or some gesture, or a reflection...on a piece of watercolor paper. It need not be a complete painting, but just the gist of it. That was what I needed in order to continue a painting once back home. Pictures helped, obviously, but the first washes I jotted down on my watercolor paper talked to me, like no other thing. Those simple touches of paint were my memories! Finally, I could paint my memories. Here is an example of such exercise!
